Professional Experience
Gary began his career at one of South Manchester’s largest independent accountancy firms, qualifying as a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) in 1989. He was an equity partner for 22 years and built a reputation for fostering and building strong long-term client relationships and delivering tailored financial solutions for businesses of all sizes, from startups to multinational corporations.
A significant portion of Gary’s career was dedicated to the legal sector. He founded and led his former firm’s Professional Practices’ Division, advising a portfolio of over 50 law firms—including large partnerships with significant annual fee incomes exceeding millions of pounds. His specialist knowledge spans:
- Financial reporting, benchmarking, and growth strategy
- Compliance with SRA Accounts Rules and tax planning
- Firm restructuring, mergers, acquisitions, and incorporations
- Funding solutions and remuneration planning
- Exit, retirement, and succession strategies

After the sale of his practice in 2020, Gary took a career break during the pandemic, using the time to recharge and refocus. Now fully refreshed, he brings his expertise directly into the legal sector, drawn by Step Legal’s long term ambitions including commitment to quality, community, and strategic growth across its offices.
In his role as Head of Finance, Gary oversees financial operations, risk management, and long-term strategic planning. His focus is on creating robust frameworks to support the firm’s expansion while ensuring resources are aligned to enhance service delivery.
